Staying current. I would say the fifth thing you need to be a successful IP lawyer is to stay current in your field. There are always new cases or legislative proposals, and it helps to keep an eye on those. For example, when a client asks if something they saw on the news will affect their company, you don’t want to be caught off-guard. The easy way to do this is to subscribe to a few intellectual property newsletters, skim the headlines, and check out the ones that are most relevant to your clients’ industries. Sometimes what you see is worth a client alert.
