Willing to Act as Local Counsel
Giffen & Kaminski is a certified women-owned law firm. It began with two women and it has grown and has maintained its women-owned status. We have grown our firm by looking for, hiring and developing diverse talent. However, our commitment to diversity goes well beyond our women-owned status. One of our core beliefs is that an inclusive environment enhances the quality of services to our clients and our relationships with our colleagues and the community. We believe the true strength of our firm lies in the unique backgrounds, experiences, and talents of our attorneys and staff. We know this diversity brings improved decision making and an improved work environment. Indeed, we think our diversity gives us a competitive advantage in servicing our clients.
At Giffen & Kaminski our lawyers are not only diverse in race and ethnicity but also come from diverse economic, religious, geographic, and educational backgrounds. We span several decades in age and we have different sexual orientations. We actively look to hire lawyers with different thinking and personality styles. We are proud to say that we truly bring to the table diversity in background and thought.
For all of our work, we use a team approach and bring to the table on major strategic decisions a group of lawyers to “round table” the issues both legal and factual. We do this without billing the client for each participant’s time because we believe that major strategic decisions, particularly with regarding to Judge and Jury responses, should not be made in a vacuum.
The priority we have on diversity is reflected in the activities and initiatives in which our firm and our attorneys engage. We have won several awards for our leadership in diversity including the first ever Diversity Pioneer Award from the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Association. Since our inception, we have been active members of the National Association of Women and Minority Owned Law Firms (“NAMWOLF”). One of our founders, Karen Giffen served on the Board of NAMWOLF. Our attorneys are frequent speakers and prolific authors advocating for and discussing diversity and inclusion. As President of the local bar association, Kerin Kaminski was responsible for the revitalization of the Women in Law Section and Karen Giffen chaired the section early in its revitalization. Kerin Kaminski also held two of the largest attended Diversity Conferences in Cleveland bringing in nationally known experts and business owners who had success in diversifying their work force. We remain on the Cleveland Metropolitan Bar Associations Diversity & Inclusion Committee. We are involved with and leaders in many other women and minority-owned professional associations, including: the Norman S. Minor Bar Association, the Minority Corporate Counsel Association (MCCA), the Diversity Committee of DRI, the Ohio Women’s Bar Association and Women’s Business Enterprise National Counsel (WBENC).
We represent our clients in the community by acting as responsible corporate citizens and do so by being professional, respectful, politically correct and compassionate to others as we go about our work of defending our clients. Because diversity is of a deep personal importance to all of our lawyers and staff, we live our diversity policy day to day and in everything that we do.
At Giffen & Kaminski, we believe that being an active promoter of inclusion in the legal profession and an active partner in sustaining the many varied communities in which we work and live is not only good business, but is also part of our duty as responsible corporate citizens.
